Here is the famous engraving of the
braque du Bourbonnais in 1598, from the Italian naturalist
Aldrovandi.
The Bologna museum has a colored version of
this engraving. This original drawing, done by Aldrovandi himself, has a lot of
interest, because it shows a liver dog, fawn-ticked at the muzzle and legs, a
characteristic coat of the old Bourbonnais, mentioned in the 1925 standard.
The drawing is of bad quality,
particularly for the proportions, because Aldrovandi was a bad drawer. It was
his disciples, much better artists, who did the engraving that we know from his
indications.
